The Art and Design department offers a lively and creative learning environment in which students can explore a range of practical skills and processes.
Our aim is to encourage students to develop independent learning and to investigate a broad spectrum of cultural and expressive themes.
The department is staffed by a team of two specialist teachers committed to widening the student’s creative abilities, skills and their understanding of Art.

Key Stage 3
The Importance of Art and Design
In art, craft and design pupils explore visual, tactile and other creative experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. They learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. In art, craft and design pupils reflect critically on their own and other people’s work, judging quality, value and meaning. They learn to think and act as artists, craftspeople and designers, working creatively and intelligently. They develop an appreciation of art, craft and design, and its role in the creative and cultural industries that enrich their lives.’ National Curriculum for Art and Design.
The Art curriculum at KS3 offers the use of a variety of materials and processes including drawing, mark making, painting, printmaking, mixed media, 3D modelling and construction techniques. Students study the work of artists, craftspeople and designers from different eras and places.
Key Stage 4
Art and Design is a popular and successful GCSE option subject
The coursework during Year 10 comprises of set projects developing into more independent works in Year11. This enables students to diversify into areas where they hold the most interest. We host an annual exhibition of GCSE student’s work to which family and friends are invited.
There are two areas of assessment:
An Individual portfolio of work worth 60%. The portfolio is selected from work undertaken during the course of study and must include more than one project.
Externally Set Task worth 40%. Students respond to their chosen starting point to produce a personal response within a given period of time and a 10 hour period of sustained study.
All work undertaken must cover the assessment objectives and will be marked by the Art staff and moderated by AQA.
The Oriental Museum at Durham University, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Foxglove Covet, Catterick, Redcar and surrounding coastline in partnership with Carmel College, Darlington.
