ICT & Computing

Outline:

ICT should not be viewed as a stand-alone subject, but a tool to support learning and teaching throughout the school.  With this in mind we aim to enable students to make the leap from users of ICT, to producers of ICT, organising work in a manner which allows them to examine their own performance, and apply skills across the whole curriculum.

 Key Stage 3

We aim to enable students in Key Stage 3 to become confident and safe users of ICT.  Throughout the 3 years students will completed a range of ICT and Computer Science based topics. This follows the national curriculum for Computing and allows student to distinguish the difference between the 2 subjects.

 In ICT students will undertake creative projects that involve selecting, using, and combining multiple applications, preferably across a range of devices, to achieve challenging goals, including collecting and analysing data and meeting the needs of known users.

 In Computer Science students will learn how computers work, the parts of a computer and learn to program. In year 7 this will start with image based programming and progress to text based programming in year 9.

 Key Stage 4

At KS4 there is the option of GCSE Computer Science and the option of ICT.

The OCR GCSE Computer Science option allows students to explore how computers work and develop programming skills. The qualification consists of 3 units:

 COMP 1 – Fundamentals of Computer Systems (Exam), 40% of final grade

COMP 2 – Programming Theory (Exam), 40% of final grade

COMP 3 – Programming Project (Non Exam Assessment), 20% of final grade

 The Ingots ITQ is a level 2 qualification, equivalent to a GCSE. This option allows students to engage in the everyday use of ICT software and expand creative skills. The qualifications consists of 2 sections:

 Coursework – This is a Pass/Fail element and contributes 30 marks to the final mark

Exam – This is a computer based test out of 70 marks

 50 marks are required overall to gain a grade C.
